Do you know what’s good for the environment? Jumping off the consumption treadmill. In the furnishings world, this means investing in good quality pieces that you will love, care for, and use for a long time. Here’s the deal, you are simply more likely to care for something and keep something around if you believe it to be beautiful, and if it brings you joy. If you select something that you will love for 2-3 or more times longer than it’s inferior alternative. Not only does the math work out to save you money over the course of your life, the environment is spared all of that extra junk in the landfills.

When in doubt, choose beauty. It’s a win-win for the environment and for your wallet.

Work With What You Have

I have a secret to share with you. The very best spaces resonate with the person or business that lives there. Beautiful rooms hold clues to the past, purpose, and future of their inhabitant. You simply can’t run to a store and buy all of the things to make a perfect space. Even the most styled space created in a vacuum will feel just a little bit one-dimensional and off.

Start with what you have. Eliminate everything that doesn’t work, and build. The building can be slow or fast, but it must only include what serves a specific purpose or brings you joy.

P.S. Feel free to apply these rules to any area of your life, not just interior design.
